Panama's newest president is Martin Torrijos, the son of a former military dictator and a one-time McDonald's manager in Chicago, The Guardian reports. "'We have good relations with all countries of the world, especially with the United States,' he told The Associated Press."
A business environment analysis of Panama done in 1999 judged Torrijos to be "the favorite" of the business community, since "it seems likely that he will pursue the pro-business (though not especially reformist) policies of the Balladares administration rather than revert to the populism of his father, Omar Torrijos."
